Calvert School is a kindergarten through 8th grade co-ed school for students in Baltimore, Maryland. The school uses a unique curriculum and has a homeschooling division which administers the curriculum shipped to families around the country and all over the world. Developed in 1907, the home school curriculum grew by being advertised in the National Geographic magazine as a kindergarten program for those wishing to offer a better education to their children at the cost of $5 dollars.

The essence of a Calvert education is a solid grounding in reading, writing, and arithmetic. The reading program uses materials of superior literary quality and stresses comprehension and analysis. Students learn to write with style and discipline under close supervision. The principles of English grammar reinforce proper written and oral expression. Basic mathematical skills are mastered so that they become useful tools in solving quantitative problems. Calvert emphasizes creative thinking and problem-solving. Integral to the Calvert program is instruction in methods of organizing work, studying for tests, and preparing and presenting research papers. Teachers help children understand and learn from their mistakes. By requiring students to correct their work, teachers encourage accountability, pride in work, and a sense of accomplishment.

Science, geography and history are significant parts of the curriculum and stimulate interest in our world and in our heritage. In particular, history and geography are taught to give children a sense of their place in time and space. Music, French, Latin, Spanish, art, art history and drama are offered to broaden artistic and cultural horizons, and to encourage creativity. A strong, varied physical education and athletic program provides for physical development and fosters good sportsmanship.

It takes pride in its homeschooling program's wide geographic reach in the world, quoting alumni anecdotes on its website such as the following:

As one young boy who lived with his lighthouse-keeper father off the Alaskan coast reported in 1952, "The boat brings our supplies every month from the mainland — and my Calvert lessons, too." That same year, the young daughter of an American missionary in Africa wrote to apologize that she was behind in her Calvert home school studies, because "the lions roaring all night keep us awake."
