Alexandru Leşco was a member of the so-called "Ilaşcu group" which in
Transnistria received highly controversial sentences forwar crimes andterrorism following theWar of Transnistria . On 9 December 1993, the Supreme Court of Transnistria found Alexandru Leşco guilty of murdering a representative of the State with the aim of spreading terror and unauthorised use of ammunition or explosives. He was sentenced to 12 years, but only served 9. He was released in 2004.Although more than ten years have passed, the actions of the Ilaşcu group are still controversial. The Russian-language press routinely refers to the group's members as "terrorists" while
Romania in particular has defended them and have given some of the memberscitizenship .
