Fred Tilson

Samuel Frederick (Fred) Tilson (born April 19, 1904 in Swinton, South Yorkshire) is a former Football player for Manchester City and England. He signed for the Manchester team along with Eric Brook from Barnsley F.C. and was part of the great City team that won both the FA Cup and the League Championship (Division 1) in the 1930s.

1934 FA Cup Final

He is probably most famous for his part in Manchester City's triumph in the FA Cup Final 1934. Tilson spoke to young goalkeeper Frank Swift at half time, telling him that he would make amends to the team's 1-0 half time deficit by scoring two goals in the second half. This he did, and Man City won by two goals to one.

England career

Fred managed to get into the England squad based on his FA Cup form. His debut came against Hungary, where he scored. However, his England career was limited due to his age, and Fred finished his brief international career with an impressive six goals from four caps, scoring in all four games in which he played.

Trivia

One of the back streets near Maine Road, the former home of Manchester City, is named Fred Tilson Close in his honour.
