Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie constitutes the majority of freight traffic, althoughpulpwood ,chemical s used by thesteel industry ,slab steel,paper , and miscellaneous goods are also carried. The railway also serves aDomtar paper mill at Espanola. According to Genessee and Wyoming's website, the railway handles 23,000 carloads a yearFact|date=April 2007.The route has variable topography and trains typically require 3-4
EMD GP40 locomotives to haul the 40-60 car trains. The line parallels Highway 17 for much of its length.
