February 17

* "U-83" GER attacked and sunk by Q-ship HMS "Farnborough" UK. Thirty five crew killed.

February 21

* SS "Mendi" UK rammed and sunk by SS "Darro" off St Catherine's Point. A total of 646 passengers and crew were killed.

February 25

* RMS "Laconia" (UK): Sunk near Fastnet by German submarine U-50

March

March 19

* HMS "Paragon" UK sunk in battle with German destroyers.

March 23

* HMS "Laforey" UK exploded and sank off Boulogne with the loss of 59 crew. Eighteen survivors rescued.

June

June 7

* "UC-29' GER sunk by Q-ship HMS "Pargust" UK, which it had attacked. Twenty three crew killed.

June 15

** SS Kristianiafjord""' NOR wrecked off Cape Race, Newfoundland. All 1,144 passengers and crew rescued.

July

July 8

* SS "Valetta" UK sunk by U-boat. Forty four survivors rescued by USS "Jacob Jones" USA.

July 9

* HMS "Vanguard' UK exploded and sank at Scapa Flow. Only two survivors, 843 crew killed.

July 22

* SS "Dafila" UK sunk by U-boat. Twenty six survivors rescued by USS "Jacob Jones" USA.

August

August 8

* Schooner "George A Marsh' USA sank during a storm on Lake Ontario. Twelve people killed, including seven children.

August 15

* FV "Nelson" UK and FV "Ethel & Millie" UK sunk by 'UC-41" GER. Seven crew of "Ethel & Millie" taken prisoner.

August 21

* "UC-41" GER sunk after an internal explosion in Tay estuary. All 27 crew and 7 British POWs killed.

September 2

* "U-28' GER sunk by explosion of SS "Olive Branch", which it had attacked. All 39 crew killed.

September 7

* SS "Minnehaha" UK torpedoed and sunk by "U-48" with the loss of 43 lives.

October

October 19

* HMS "Orama" torpedoed by U-boat. Three hundred and five survivors rescued by USS "Jacob Jones" USA.

December

December 2

* "UB-81' GER mined off the Isle of Wight and sunk. Seven crew escaped, 27 killed.

December 6

* USS "Jacob Jones" USA torpedoed off Scilly Isles by "U-53" GER. Sixty four crew killed, two taken prisoner.

December 17

* USS "F-1' USA sank after a collision with USS "F-3' USA off Point Loma, California. Nineteen crew killed.
