Bay Farm Island, Alameda, California

Bay Farm Island is a section of the city of Alameda, California, though it is separtated from the rest of the City by an estuary. This was originally an island in San Francisco Bay, but due to landfill it is now connected to the mainland of Oakland, California and Oakland Airport. Marshy areas of the island were also reclaimed by landfill.

Today, Bay Farm Island is home to the 36 hole Chuck Corica Golf Complex, The Oakland Raiders headquarters, office and retail complexes, and several housing developments. There is a chain of lagoons as well as several parks including Shoreline Park, and a greenbelt that surrounds perimeter of the peninsula.

There are two elementary schools on Bay Farm Island: Bay Farm Elementary and and Earhart Elementary, the latter is named for aviatrix Amelia Earhart who started many of her flights from the nearby Oakland Airport.

Prior to 20th century development, Bay Farm Island was farmland, asparagus being the principal crop, thus it was also known as "Asparagus Island". The island was the site of oyster beds which supplied restaurants in San Francisco. ["Alameda" (magazine), November, 2005]
