Burwash was the name of a village in
Ontario ,Canada , located approximately convert|30|mi|km|0 south of Sudbury. Canadian Northern Railway (today'sCanadian National Railway ). At its peak, the correctional facility owned convert|35000|acre|ha|0 and leased an additional convert|100000|acre|ha|0 of land. A village was required for the guards and support staff that worked at the prison farm. The village, built by inmate labour, housed anywhere up to about 1000 residents. It boasted a public school, a church, a post office, a barber shop, a tailor shop and a shoe repair shop. There was also a grocery store that sold bread, meat and vegetables produced by the inmates.
