The city was founded on November 1, 2005.

Merger

*On November 1, 2005, the city of Shinminato and the municipalities of Daimon, Kosugi, Oshima and Shimo (all from Imizu District) merged to form the new city of Imizu. Imizu District was dissolved as a result of this merger.
