ARICNS =109 Piscium, often cataloged HD 10697, is a
yellow subgiant star approximately 106light-year s away in theconstellation of Pisces. It is commonly thought that the star is similar to theSun , but with a higher abundance ofiron . As of 1999, anextrasolar planet has been confirmed to be orbiting the star.cite journal | url=http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/308981 | author=Vogt "et al." | title=Six New Planets from the Keck Precision Velocity Survey | journal=TheAstrophysical Journal | year=2000 | volume=536 | issue=2 | pages=902 – 914 | doi=10.1086/308981]Stellar characteristics
109 Piscium is a
yellow subgiant star of thespectral type of "G3-5Va-IV". It is thought that the star has about 1.1 times more mass than the Sun, along with 1.1 times the diameter and 2.7 times theluminosity . The star appears to be about 1.41 times as enriched with elements heavier thanhydrogen (based on its abundance ofiron ). 109 Piscium is a slow rotator and chromospherically inactive, believed to be around eight billion years old and may have already ceased hydrogen fusion at itscore .Planetary system
In 1999, a team of astronomers (lead by
Geoffrey Marcy andR. Paul Butler ) announced the discovery of anextrasolar planet companion (now designated109 Piscium b ) of 109 Piscium. The planet is thought to be at least 6.05 times the mass ofJupiter . However, because the method of detection relies on radial velocities using the Doppler technique only determines the object's minimum mass, companion 109 Piscium b may actually be abrown dwarf . Either way,109 Piscium b is separated from 109 Piscium on average by 2.12astronomical unit s (AU). It moves around the star in a circular orbit that takes over 2.9 years to complete.OrbitboxPlanet

* In the
1983 Star Trek novel "The Wounded Sky" byDiane Duane , the USS Enterprise intentionally causes 109 Piscium to gosupernova by enteringwarp drive too close to the star, in order to destroy a group of pursuingKlingon vessels. Captain Kirk experiences an uneasy sense that he may "get in trouble with Starfleet" over this arguably rash course of action.See also
