January 15 1922 –May 14 1997 ) was ajazz singer and actress, best known as "Miss One" in the movie "The Wiz ". In 1939 she joinedCount Basie , where she recorded some of her most memorable material. After Basie she recorded withTeddy Wilson and theDeep River Boys . She sang on Eddie Cantor's radio show 1945-46. Her solo chart record "Yes I'm Lonesome Tonight" reached the Billboard Top 60 early in 1961. She kept touring into the 60s. In the 70's she began an acting career.She died in 1997 from a heart attack.
