Lindy bombing

Lindy bombing

Lindy bombing is the act of a group of swing dancers going to a non-swing dancing venue or location and dancing swing. [ [http://www.doubletongued.org/index.php/dictionary/lindy_bomb/ "lindy bomb" definition from Double-Tongued Dictionary ] ] The purpose of lindy bombing is to expose dancing to other people in an amusing way.

Sometimes a venue is chosen because it plays music (such as a bar or country bar). In locations where there is no music (such as parks and art galleries), music and a portable player are brought along by the lindy bombers.

The objectives of lindy bombing is education and sometimes surprise and stealth. Dancers lindy bomb to show other people what the dance they love looks like. Hopefully, exposure will encourage other people to learn swing dancing. Venues are often chosen to surprise the people at the venue. Stealth is sometimes needed when dancers choose an atypical location. For example, dancers may dance one or two songs at an art gallery and then disappear before anyone has the chance to tell them they can't dance there. Lindy bombers are generally well-received as they perform free positive entertainment. However, Lindy bombing can sometimes be rude, as dancers can get in the way of others or distract from the main purpose of the area (for example, it is difficult to appreciate art in a museum that is being Lindy bombed).

The term "lindy bombing" is named such because of a popular swing dance called Lindy Hop, and the act of "taking over" a venue ("bombing"). Depending on the music played, other dances may be danced, such as East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Jive, or Balboa.
