regional municipality located inOntario ,Canada in the southwest part of theGreater Toronto Area and until 1974 was known as Halton County. It comprises the city of Burlington and the towns of Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills and is policed by theHalton Regional Police Service . The region's headquarters are located in Oakville. Before 1974, the county seat was Milton.The town of Oakville and the city of Burlington make up the largely urban area to the south, while the towns of Milton and Halton Hills to the north are significantly more rural despite the presence of growing urban areas. Urbanization in Brampton to the east in neighbouring Peel Region have made urban areas in the GTA uninterrupted all the way to the
City of Toronto as is visible onGoogle Earth satellite images of theGreater Toronto Area and theGolden Horseshoe .Halton region experienced a growth rate of 17.1% between the 2001 and 2006 census, giving it one of the highest growth rates in the country. Despite the unprecedented growth in residential development in Halton, agriculture and protected lands along the
