Political parties in Somalia lists political parties in Somalia. Somalia is country in transition. Political parties don't play an institutionalized role at the moment. Many of the political factions are rather militia and/or clan outfits, with little political emphasis.
Formerly there were a number of political parties in Somalia, however during the chaotic years of civil war many of these have morphed into independent or semi-independent regional states, or fragmented into feuding warlords. These parties still have some significance in the
Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and wider Somali politics, but other developments have *vastly overshadowed their importance, and the political feuds of yesterday are something of a sideshow with the ICU taking over the country.*
United Somali Parliamentarians - Major party which supports the incumbent Prime Minister.*
Somali Youth League - This party led Somalia to independence, and governed untilSiad Barre overthrew the government in a coup d'état. Defunct.
*Somali Democratic Movement - Digil & Rahanweyn clan-based party active during the civil war, before dissolving from internal division. Currently involved in the Transitional Federal Government.
*Somali National Movement - Took over the north of the country and declared independence asSomaliland .
*Somali Patriotic Movement - Ogaden clan-based party, dissolved into petty warlordism. Currently involved in the Transitional Federal Government.
*Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party - The party ofSiad Barre , primarily aMarehan clan-based party. Its successor, theSomali National Front (SNF) eventually declared autonomy as the state ofJubaland . This southern Somali group continued to evolve into theAllied Somali Forces and then into theJuba Valley Alliance (JVA), which is now part of the Transitional Federal Government. Decades previous,Marehan Union Party members were elected from Lugh, BeledHawo and Bardera constituencies. Following the defeat of the colonial powers in early 1960s, two MPs from Marehan Union joined the first civil government of Somalia.
*Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF) - An alliance of factions opposed to Siad Barre. Currently involved in the Transitional Federal Government (TFG).
*United Somali Congress - Hawiye clan-based party which initially declared itself the successors to Siad Barre. Dissolved spectacularily into vicious infighting. Currently involved in the Transitional Government.
*Sixth Clan - pan-Somali women's movement which successfully lobbied for women's representation in theTransitional Federal Parliament , led byAsha Haji Elmi .
