MOON BOOT Type Private Industry Textile Founded 1971 Headquarters Giavera del Montello, Italy Key people • Giancarlo Zanatta, Founder Products Footwear Website www.moonboot.it Moon Boots are footwear first created in the early 1970s by manufacturer Tecnica Group of Giavera del Montello, Italy. They became a notable fashion trend throughout the 1980s. The boot is constructed with a thin rubber outsole and cellular rubber midsole. The boot is sized small, medium, large, etc. and has no distinct left or right feet. Tecnica trademarked the Moon Boot name in 1978. As of 2010[update] Tecnica still offers the Moon Boot though there are many imitators. With the name trademarked, the authentic Tecnica boot is the only one able to be marketed as a "Moon Boot", although colloquially the term "Moon boot" has become a generic term for any softshell ankle-high footwear.
These fashionable snow shoes have been popularised on the silver screen, in the 2004 hit Napoleon Dynamite;[citation needed] "They're basically moon boots but have better traction and are more aerodynamic," Napoleon explains. "You should probably get a pair."
