- Prince's Stone
The Prince's Stone ( _de. Fürstenstein, _sl. Knežji kamen) is the base of an ancient Roman ionic column that played an important role in the ceremonies surrounding the installation of the princes of
Carantania and later, together with theDuke's chair , of the dukes ofCarinthia . These were held in the Slovene language on theZollfeld Plain .The stone probably originates from the nearby Roman city of
Virunum , whereas the coat of arms of theDuchy of Carinthia at its top surfaceFact|date=July 2008 was engraved during the Middle Ages. Till 1862, when it was transferred to the Carinthian Provincial Museum, it stood northwest of theCarolingian palatinate ofKarnburg (Slovene: _sl. "Krnski grad"), a village 5 km north ofKlagenfurt ,Austria .In 2005, the decision of the
Slovenian government to depict the Prince's Stone on the national side of the Slovenian 2 cent coin caused some consternation in Austria. Since then, the stone was at first displayed in the Office of the Government of Carinthia, but was transferred again in 2006 to the Heraldic Hall in the Klagenfurt Landhaus.ee also
