- Stanton Coit
Stanton Coit (1857-1944) was an American leader in the
Ethical Culture movement, especially inEngland .He was born in
Columbus, Ohio ; studied at Amherst, at Columbia, and at theHumboldt University of Berlin , where he took the degree of Ph.D..He was head worker of the
New York University Settlement , and became an aide ofFelix Adler in theSociety for Ethical Culture . In 1888, he went to London as minister of theSouth Place Ethical Society .He became president of the
West London Ethical Society , preached in the Queen's Road (Bayswater) Ethical Church, and in 1910, was a Labour Party candidate for theParliament of the United Kingdom from Wakefield.He was editor of the "
International Journal of Ethics " in 1893-1905, and compiled "The Message of Man: A Book of Ethical Scriptures" (1902), an "Ethical Hymn Book" (1905), "Responsive Services" (1911), and "Social Worship" (1913), and wrote translations of Gizycki's works on ethics. He published:
