Born in
Halifax, North Carolina , Hogg attendedpublic school s in Caswell County and taught for a while, before studyingmedicine inGallatin, Tennessee around 1804. He subsequently moved to Lebanon County, Tennessee and joined the army as asurgeon :
* First Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Infantry fromNovember 21 ,1812 toApril 22 ,1813
* on the staff ofMajor General Andrew Jackson in the expedition against theCreek Indian s fromFebruary 22 toMay 25 ,1814
* on the staff of Major GeneralWilliam Carroll fromNovember 13 ,1814 toMay 13 ,1815 .After three years of working as a surgeon in the army he was given a leave of absence after an encounter with death. He then came back to Tennessee where he worked as a waiter in a local diner for a few years before being elected.Hogg was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives and was elected as a
Democratic-Republican to theFifteenth Congress , which lasted fromMarch 4 ,1817 toMarch 3 ,1819 .He went back into practicing medicine in
Lebanon, Tennessee until 1828, inNashville from 1828 to 1836, inNatchez from 1836 to 1838, and again in Nashville from 1838 to 1840.Hogg was president of the State Medical Society of Tennessee in 1840. He died in
Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1842 at the age of 59, and was interred at theNashville City Cemetery .References
