Sylvia Tyson, C.M. (born Sylvia Fricker September 19, 1940 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada), is a singer-songwriter, broadcaster, and guitarist who found early fame in Canada and abroad with her then-husband Ian Tyson in their folk duo Ian and Sylvia and Great Speckled Bird.

Sylvia Tyson wrote one of the duo's most memorable songs, "You Were On My Mind". The song was covered by artists We Five and Crispian St. Peters in the 1960s, and most recently by Serena Ryder in her November 2006 album "If Your Memory Serves You Well".

Divorced from Ian and the mother of Clay Tyson, himself a performer, Sylvia has continued her music career in the critically acclaimed all-female folk group Quartette, as well as contributing to the Canadian music scene as a board member of FACTOR and the Juno Awards. She also established an independent record label, Salt Music, in the late 1970s.

Sylvia Tyson was made a Member of The Order of Canada in 1994.

Awards and recognition

Sylvia Tyson was first nominated for a Juno Award in 1987 as Country Female Vocalist of the Year. She has not yet won a Juno award, despite seven nominations to date.

The Canadian Music Hall of Fame inducted Ian and Sylvia as a duo in 1992.

In 2003, Sylvia Tyson was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
