James Lally (also O'Mullally) (d. 1691) was an Irish
County Galway landowner and politician.He was a leading member of the old Gaelic sept of the O'Mullallys (in Irish Ó Maolalaidh), which was based in the parish of
Tuam , County Galway. Their lands comprised the lands known as Tulach na Dála (Anglicised as Tullindaly, Tullenadaly, Tullaghnadaly, or Tolendal), four miles north of Tuam town.The eldest of five brothers, he was the son of
Thomas Lally andJane Dillon , sister ofTheobald Dillon, 7th Viscount Dillon . Lally sat as representative ofTuam Borough in King James II'sPatriot Parliament of 1689. After the Jacobite defeat, his lands were attained and he was declared an outlaw.He went to
France in 1690 with his cousin, the Honourable ColonelArthur Dillon , in whose regiment, as Colonel-Commandant, he was killed atMontmélian in 1691. His brother,Gerald Lally , followed him to France and was father ofThomas Arthur Lally (1702-1766),Baron de Tollendal andComte de Lally .
