South African Department of Intelligence Services

The Ministry of Intelligence Services is one of the ministries of the South African government. It oversees the South African Government's civilian intelligence agencies. The current Minister of Intelligence Services is Siyabonga Cwele. The Ministry was created after the elections of 1999. In 1994, the intelligence service affairs were subordinated to the Justice Ministry. In 1995, Joe Nhlanhla became Deputy Minister in the Justice Ministry, responsible for intelligence affairs. In 1999, Nhlanhla became the first Minister of the new department, in 2004 he was succeeded by Ronnie Kasrils. Kasrils was in turn succeeded by Cwele in 2008.
