August 5 ,1976 inMarston Green nearBirmingham ) is an English football (soccer)midfielder , who currently plays for theColorado Rapids ofMajor League Soccer . He represented England at U16, U18 and U21 levels.Cooke came up through the youth system of Manchester United and scored the penalty that clinched the FA Youth Cup in 1995, but only appeared in eight first team matches with the club. He made his debut in the Premiership match against Bolton Wanderers in September 1995, providing the cross for a Ryan Giggs goal, and scored in the League Cup
tie against York City atBootham Crescent one month later. His time at Old Trafford was marred by a cruciate ligament injury which occurred in the autumn of 1997. Prior to suffering the injury he had been loaned out to Sunderland and Birmingham City. After recovering he was loaned to Wrexham and then Manchester City, who subsequently bought him for £1 million in 1999. From then on, it was more loans, to Wigan Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday, and Grimsby Town; he switched to the latter on a free transfer in 2002, and was a reasonable success though his time there was overshadowed by the arrival ofJohn Oster who played in his position and a public fall out with managerPaul Groves , who seemed to leave Cooke on the bench or out of the team, despite protests from supporters during the games. At the end of the 2002-2003 season it was no surprise to see Cooke leave Grimsby and he moved to Sheffield Wednesday, where he remained for one season. In 2005, Cooke signed with Colorado Rapids, and scored two goals and had two assists during his first MLS season.
On the 1st of April 2008, tabloid newspaper
The Sun featured a story on theColorado Rapids ' 4-0 victory over formerManchester United team mateDavid Beckham 'sLA Galaxy side. Cooke captained the team, in what was their first game of the season. Beckham and Cooke came through the famed youth system together atManchester United and shared digs together in Manchester at one point. The story compared the contrasting fortunes of the two players who started out together, with Beckham becoming one of the biggest celebrities ever known while Cooke struggled with injuries and making a living out of football. The story showed the irony, in light of this, that it was Cooke's side that had beaten Beckham's side.Honours
