Patriot Parliament

Patriot Parliament

The Patriot Parliament of 1689 is the name of the Irish Parliament called by James II during the Williamite war in Ireland.

James had landed at Kinsale in March with a small army comprised of French and Irish troops to launch his bid to win back the English crown. He also wanted to see his mistress Catherine Sedley who had been obliged to move to Ireland. Because it declared that the English parliament was incompetent to pass laws for Ireland, and ignored Poynings Law, the parliament became known as the "Patriot Parliament".when

The parliament met in one session, from 7 May 1689 to 20 July 1689.

The parliament passed legislation on the
* full freedom of worship for all Catholics
* complete legislative independence for Ireland
* full cancellation of the Cromwellian land settlement

The laws passed by the Patriot Parliament were declared null and void six years later. The principle Acts can be read on-line at [http://www.ucc.ie/celt/online/E703001-004.html the UCC Celt website] .
