Henry Luke Orombi

Henry Luke Orombi

Henry Luke Orombi (born 1949) is the Archbishop of the (Anglican) Church of Uganda and Bishop of Kampala. Orombi was educated at Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono, Uganda, and St John's College, Nottingham, UK.

Before becoming Archbishop, he was Diocesian Youth Officer Madi/West Nile (1979-1986), Archdeacon at Goli in Moyo District (1987-1993) and Bishop of Nebbi District (1993-2003).

He has become an influential leader of the Global South during the Anglican realignment.

Archbishop Orombi appointed two dissident American Episcopalian priests to bishops, who formed a breakaway American branch of the Episcopal church under the authority of the Church of Uganda. Both Orombi and the dissident priests opposed the American church's ordination of homosexual priests and other issues. Controversy

On July 9, 2008, The New Vision Newspaper reported that Archbishop Orombi had addressed the West Ankole diocese alleging a threatening atmosphere or conspiracy by homosexuals to cause him harm, saying, "Nowadays, I don’t wear my collar when I am in countries which have supporters of homosexuals. I am forced to dress like a civilian because those people are dangerous. They can harm anybody who is against them. Some of them are killers. They want to close the mouth of anybody who is against them." In further remarks, he is reported to have said that there is no human right for men to sleep together nor for women to marry one another; that there was a need to "protect church and children" against homosexuality; that homosexuals inability to produce children puts them outside of God's creation of men and women; and that homosexuals are somehow taking advantage of Africa's poor by making donations, building schools and offering scholarships: "Some people have already fallen victims in Uganda and we need to stop it."cite web | first = Chris | last = Ahimbisibwe | date = 2008-07-09 | work = Article | title = Gays want to kill me, says Orombi | publisher = The New Vision | url = http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/12/638231 | accessdate = 2008-07-09 ]
