Almarhum Sultan Sir Abdul Samad ibni Almarhum Raja Abdullah, KCMG, (1804-1898) was the Sultan of Selangor from 1857 till 1898.

Reign

During his reign, Selangor saw its only civil war. The war today is known as the Klang War. In 1873 or 1874, he became the first Sultan of Selangor to accept a British Resident. Sultan Abdul Samad was conferred the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) with a title "Sir".

During his reign, he helped found one of Malaysia's premier schools, Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur along with Kapitan Yap Kwan Seng, K. Thamboosamy and Loke Yew. It was named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

Death

He died in 1898 at the age of 94 and was buried at Jugra Mausoleum and was officially known as Marhum Jugra.

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur and Sekolah Menengah Sultan Abdul Samad in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia are named after him.
