Lipton Invitational Cup

Lipton Invitational Cup

The Lipton Juniors Invitational Cup in the Philippines started in 2000 with only 6 schools participating namely Ateneo, San Beda, LSGH, Letran, Mapua and Santo Tomas. It aims to provide competitiveness for schools in sports like Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Table Tennis, etc. It is also a league wherein Lipton tries to merge both UAAP and NCAA Juniors Division. This event is always every summer usually held in Ateneo Campus, La Salle Greenhills or in Rizal Sports Centre.

In 2000, there are only 3 sports considered in this event and they are Basketball, Volleyball and Swimming. In 2001, De La Salle Zobel and Adamson joined the league making it 8 teams. In 2002, when the league became more successful, they added Badminton, Lawn Tennis and Table Tennis. It then convinced other teams from both UAAP and NCAA to join. In 2003, National, East, San Sebastian and Philippine Christian added to the league. In 2004, the organizers added Chess, Track and Field, Football and Taekwondo. It then continued until 2005 and has successfully received applications from in and outside Metro Manila schools. However, Organizers felt that it would be disappointing if that team will only field in a team in basketball or any kind of sport. So the organizers reinforced a rule that a school should join at least 6 out of the 10 sports of Lipton Juniors Cup. Besides this, they have to look at the background and achievements of every school first before they are ineligible to join the league. LSGH declined to join in 2005 likewise with Mapua and Adamson. In 2006, East and National decided not to join the league but State joined.
