Jarbidge River

Jarbidge River

The Jarbidge River is a small, high altitude river that is crossed by many small dirt roads on its way to and through the town of Jarbidge, Nevada. The Big Bend (National Forest Service) campground is located nearby (8 miles) and is suitable for day-tripping to the river. The actual village of Jarbidge is 30 to 80 miles away depending on the routes chosen. The river is quite cold, though swimming is possible; there is a danger of hypothermia. Very remote, this river eventually flows into the Bruneau River, then onto the Snake; therefore, it is one of very few rivers in Northern Nevada that eventually empty into the Pacific Ocean. Flow rates vary wildly, and access is near impossible from other locations in Nevada until about June/July due to snowdrifts across the mountainous access roads; otherwise access is from Idaho. Kayaking is possible in certain sections in early summer; class IV. Access is preferably via 4 wheel drive or ATV.
