The retromandibular vein (temporomaxillary vein, posterior facial vein), formed by the union of thesuperficial temporal and maxillary veins, descends in the substance of theparotid gland , superficial to theexternal carotid artery but beneath thefacial nerve , between theramus of the mandible and thesternocleidomastoideus muscle. It divides into two branches:
* an "anterior", which passes forward and unites with theanterior facial vein to form thecommon facial vein .
* a "posterior", which is joined by theposterior auricular vein and becomes theexternal jugular vein .External links
