Arbella Stuart ."The "Arbella" was the flagship of theWinthrop Fleet on which, betweenApril 8 andJune 12 1630 , GovernorJohn Winthrop , other members of the Company andPuritan emigrants transported themselves and the Charter of theMassachusetts Bay Company fromEngland to Salem, thereby giving legal birth to theCommonwealth of Massachusetts .John Winthrop is reputed to have given the famous "City upon a Hill " sermon aboard the ship.The ship was at first known as the "Eagle". Its name was changed in honor of Lady Arabella Johnson, who was a member of Winthrop's company, along with her husband, Isaac Johnson. [Channing, Edward (1907).
