General information

Dupre Hall is located on the campus' northeast end, at the corner of Summit and Snelling Avenues. It was built in 1962 and was last renovated in the summer of 1994. All of the building's four residential floors are co-ed. Dupre houses over 260 freshmen and sophomores, in rooms designed for one, two, three, or four people. There are also four rooms that house four residents on each floor. The building is named after Dr. J. Huntley Dupre, former Professor of History and Dean of Macalester from 1946-1964. Dr. Dupre was reputedly known as "Chuckles" Dupre during his college years.[citation needed]

Dupre Hall is the only hurricane-proof dormitory on the Macalester campus. The plans for the building were actually originally made for a university in Florida, so Macalester got a discount on the plans. Since Hurricanes never occur in Minnesota, this is a humorous designation.

Facilities

The first floor has a formal lounge that includes a fireplace, and a piano. Also located on this floor is the office of the residence hall director. There are no student rooms on the first floor. Floors two through five each contain four bathrooms (two for each sex), two washers and two dryers, and an informal lounge. Each lounge has cable television and couches and chairs. There is a microwave, sink, and soft drink vending machine in every lounge kitchen. The building has two 24-hour computer labs located on the second and third floors—on the fourth and fifth, the equivalent room is designated a study lounge. All rooms in Dupre are Ethernet accessible. There is outdoor bicycle storage located in an open-air space under the second floor. Dupre is approximately 60% two-person rooms (14’8” x 14’4”) and 40% single-person rooms (14’4” x 7’). It has two three-person rooms and one four person room on each floor.

Nicknames

Twelve nicknames which students use to refer to Dupre Hall are "The Duprojects", "DupAwesome", "DuPrime Real Estate," "Dupressing," "Duprison", "Duprived", "Duparadise", "Duputers", "Dupes" "The Duper" "The Super Duper," "Dupringles" and "DuVuvu". The term "Duprojects" combines the name of the dorm with "housing projects", poking fun at the perception among students that the building has inferior facilities as compared to the other Macalester dormitories. Dupringles stems from the students believing Dupre is the funnest dorm, and ""Once you pop, the fun don't stop", which is the motto of pringles. DuVuvu comes from the many of the residents during the 2010 Fifa World Cup playing Vuvuzela's very loud throughout the dorm. Frequent claims are made by students that Dupre singles are smaller than standard prison cells. However, in the state of Minnesota, prisons are required to provide 70 sq. ft. of space per prisoner (e.g. 10' by 7') except in minimum security facilities that "provide unlimited access" to exercise rooms and similar facilities[1]. Furthermore, the Dupre singles are precisely half the standard Dupre doubles; while they perhaps appear smaller to the eye or feel smaller, they provide the same area per student as a double. Some Dupre residents have been known to complain about the lack of amenities compared to other residence halls.

In fall 2011 came the Duprocean, voted "best floor" three times in a row. Located at the end of Dupre 4 West, the Duprocean was paradise. Featuring fishes, sharks, dolphins, seagulls, monkeys, and palm trees, students flocked to the Duprocean to bask in the sun despite much work to be done. People living elsewhere always envied Duproceaners for having the best tans.
