Roslin Institute

Roslin Institute

The Roslin Institute is a government research institute at, Roslin, a village in Midlothian, Scotland, that is sponsored by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

In 1996 Sir Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell and their colleagues created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, at the institute. A year later Polly and Molly were cloned, both sheep contained a human gene.

In 2007 a Roslin team developed genetically modified chickens capable of laying eggs containing proteins needed to make cancer-fighting drugs.

The Roslin Institute has been granted permission by Midlothian council to expand, which has caused anger among locals and protesters due to a planned road linking two buildings through an SSSI area. An anti-bypass site has existed in Bilston Glen for the last four and a half years.
