Troy Norman Murray (Born
July 31 , 1962, in Calgary,Alberta ) is a former professionalice hockey centre. Murray was drafted out of theUniversity of North Dakota by theChicago Blackhawks with the 57th overall selection in the 3rd Round of the1980 NHL Entry Draft [http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1980/80rnd3.htm] and made hisNational Hockey League (NHL) debut April 4, 1982 (in Chicago against Minnesota).Professional Hockey Career Highlights
During his fifteen year NHL career, he played for the Chicago Blackhawks twice (1981–1991, 1992–1994),
Winnipeg Jets ,Ottawa Senators ,Pittsburgh Penguins , andColorado Avalanche . During the1985–86 NHL season , Murray won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward, and set career highs in goals (45), assists (54), and points (99). He won aStanley Cup in 1996 with theColorado Avalanche .Murray finished his career scoring 230 goals and 354 assists in 915 career NHL games. Murray played in twelve seasons with the Blackhawks, and ranks 14th on the Blackhawks all-time assists list with 291, 15th on the all-time points list with 488, and 18th all-time in goals with 197 (through the
2005–06 NHL season ).Amateur Hockey Career Highlights
Played part of three seasons (1977–1980) with the
St. Albert Saints of theAlberta Junior Hockey League . Also played briefly (two games in 1980) with theLethbridge Broncos of theWestern Hockey League .In two seasons at North Dakota, he was twice named to the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association Second Team All-Stars. He led North Dakota in scoring as a freshman and helped capture a national championship as a sophomore.Murray was captain of the 1982 Canadian junior national team, the first Canadian team to win a gold medal at World Junior Championships.
Off Ice
Studied business administration and engineering at North Dakota, making dean's list as a freshman. Completed his degree at
DePaul University during off-seasons while playing in Chicago.Murray was an equity index options trader at the
Chicago Mercantile Exchange circa 1997. His badge, the unique indentifier each trader wears, was CUP.Murray served as the TV studio analyst from the start of the 1998–99 season until November 13, 2003 when he was named TV color commentator.
Married, Murray and his wife Konnie have three children, Blake, Julia and Phoebe.
