Will Studd’s passion for cheese was ignited during the 1970s, when he established a chain of delicatessens in
London . Since migrating toAustralia in1981 , he has established a successful business distributing some of the world’s finest cheeses, has mentored Australian cheese-makers to help raise the standard of local cheese, and has introduced a generation of food lovers to good cheese through master classes and magazine articles.Awards
In
2000 , he was named a Maître Fromager (Master of Cheese) by France’s Guilde des Fromagers and is the guild’s only “ambassadeur”. Two years later he was awarded the French Government’s prestigious Ordre du Mérite Agricole (Agricultural Order of Merit) for his efforts in defence of traditional cheese.In
2005 , Studd won a lengthy legal battle with the Australian Government to overturn a ban on the importation of some traditional raw milk cheeses such as Roquefort. The wrangle resulted in Studd being dubbed a "cheese terrorist" in a Dairy Industry Association of Australia magazine – and led to a review of the Australian food standards.Studd’s first book, "Chalk and Cheese" (published in pp1999 [), won a string of awards, including a silver ladle at the World Food Media Awards in 1999, and was declared Best Cheese Book in the World at the World Cookbook Fair Awards in 2000. Now out of print, Chalk and Cheese has become a collector’s item and is recognised by cheese specialists around the world as a valuable guide to understanding good cheese.
