- Giovanni Arrighi
Giovanni Arrighi is a scholar of
political economy andsociology , and as of early 2008 aProfessor of Sociology atJohns Hopkins University . His work has been translated into over fifteen languages.Arrighi was born in
Italy in 1937. He received hisPhD ineconomics from theUniversity of Milan in 1960. After a few years of teaching in Italy, he went toAfrica in 1963. Arrighi first taught at the University College of Rhodesia (nowZimbabwe ) and then later at theUniversity College of Dar es Salaam , while conducting research on Africandevelopment . During this time he developed arguments about how thelabor supply and labor resistance affected the development ofcolonialism andnational liberation movements . It was there that he metImmanuel Wallerstein , with whom he would later collaborate on a number of research projects. After returning to Italy in 1969, Arrighi and others formed the "Gruppo Gramsci" in 1971. In 1979 Arrighi joined Wallerstein and Terence Hopkins as a professor of sociology at theFernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems, and Civilizations atSUNY Binghamton . It was during this time that the Fernand Braudel Center became known as the main center of world-systems analysis, attracting scholars from all over the world. His 1994 work "The Long Twentieth Century" reinterpreted the history of capitalism since the thirteenth century as a series of alternations between 'material expansions' and 'financial expansions'. Although in many ways intellectually close to Immanuel Wallerstein, he tends to ascribe greater significance to the recent shift in economic power to
East Asia . He has also emphasized his debt toAdam Smith ,Max Weber ,Karl Marx ,Antonio Gramsci ,Karl Polanyi , andJoseph Schumpeter . He presently is a professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University. His partner is a fellow sociology professor at Johns Hopkins, Beverly Silver, with whom he has co-authored several works.
