Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association

The Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) provides a number of services for elementary through college level music groups in Southern California, including providing clinics for educators and students and hosting festivals for soloists and ensembles, including marching band competitions.

Honor Groups

The SCSBOA honor groups for elementary through high school students are prestigious music groups which students audition for. They include the band, string orchestra, full orchestra, and jazz band. All of the students who are accepted into these groups are extremely talented and perform well. The music they play is far beyond the level of that they play ordinarily at school.

Festivals

The festivals run by the organization rate groups on how well they play. Each group plays three prepared pieces and then sightreads a piece that is one level below those they prepared. For many school's music groups, these festivals are long-awaited and practiced for.

Marching Band Competitions

The Marching Band competitions are a long list of field show competitions hosted at one of the member schools, while the other schools must travel to the host and their shows are judged by other school band directors. They are judged if many categories, including: music, visual, general effect, auxiliary, and percussion. As each of the bands are rated, their size categories are listed and the top ten bands of each size rank compete at championships.
