Aricanduva

Aricanduva

Aricanduva, or, more properly, Aricanduva-Formosa (pron. IPA2|aɾikɐ̃'duva foɾ'mɔza), is a borough of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It's placed in the west margin of the Aricanduva River, which crosses the city from east to southeast. It comprises the districts of Aricanduva, Vila Formosa and Vila Carrão.

The name Aricanduva originated from Tupi (one of the languages known as Tupi-Guarani used by indigenas) and it means "place with Iris plant" - type of palm tree. It is believed the borough was founded in the earlier 1900s (1902 or 1905) [Data obtained from São Paulo city council http://portal.prefeitura.sp.gov.br/subprefeituras/spaf/dados/historico/0001] .

Aricanduva is placed in a valley which belongs to river flow, and, because of this, the floods are common. The largest mall of Latin America ("Shopping Leste Aricanduva") is located in this neighborhood, and also the largest cemetery, in Vila Formosa.

Anniversary date: 2nd Sunday of November
