Lei is the pinyin of a Chinese surname. The most common character is 雷 (Léi), meaning "Thunder". 雷 (Léi) is the 78th most common Chinese surname as of 2006 according to a study carried out by the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Common alternate non-pinyin anglicizations include Lui (common in Hong Kong) and Louie/Louis (common for descendants of the Taishan region of Guangdong).

The character 雷 (Léi) is structured with the rain radical (雨 yǔ) on top and the character for fields (田 tián) on the bottom.

A more popular Chinese surname that can be written as 'Lei' is 李 (Li) (more commonly written as Li or Lee in English). The spelling 'Lei' for this surname is used mostly in Macau.
