Goldstein College

Goldstein College is one of the residential colleges of the University of New South Wales, Australia, and is one of the three Kensington Colleges (the other two being Basser and Baxter Colleges). It is located on High Street of the Kensington campus, between Gate 4 and Gate 5. The current Head of College is Rebecca Caddy and the House President is Aaron Bonanno.

History

Goldstein College was opened on June 30, 1964, along with the Goldstein Dining Hall which is used by all three of The Kensington Colleges. It was designed by the Government Architect, Mr E.H.Farmer, and a member of his staff, Mr Peter Hall, who later became the supervising architect of the Sydney Opera House [http://www.kensingtoncolleges.unsw.edu.au/colleges/goldstein/Goldstein_index.html Official Goldstein College webpage] ] Goldstein College was named after a British Jew, Philip Godfrey Goldstein (1895-1963), who had arrived in Australia in 1911 as a migrant from England. In 1959 he donated ₤40,000 (Australian) towards the construction of the Hall and College, which initially housed women and postgraduate students, and was the first college accommodation for women on campus.

Campus

Its 74 places are open to any students enrolled at the university. It comprises two buildings surrounding a grassy courtyard accessible only to residents. Three meals per day during session are provided at the nearby dining hall which is shared with residents of the other Kensington Colleges - Basser and Philip Baxter.

Communal facilities at Goldstein College include:
*A large main common room, with a table tennis, pool, Air Hockey, and foosball table. This is where most of the major college social events occur.
*Several smaller common rooms, most of which have a kitchenette (containing a microwave oven, fridge, stove top, sink and boiling water unit).
*Laundries with coin-operated washing machines and dryers, irons and ironing boards, and clothes lines).
*A computer/study room, with printer.
*Bike racks.
*BBQ and picnic seating.
*Food and drink vending machines.
