Fallaid, in
Scotland , was the refuse ofmeal left on thebaking board, after a batch ofbread has been baked. It was dry meal, and put oncake s when fired. An interesting custom used to prevail in theOuter Hebrides , where any remains of meal on the board would be made into acake in the palm of thehand , and set tofire among the other and larger cakes. The custom has its origin in asuperstition , that doing so keeps the store of meal from wasting. It also stems from the days whenfood was far less plentiful inScotland and nothing could be wasted, except by therich and extravagant.The word may be akin to
