- Cape Peron
Cape Peron coord|32|15|55|S|115|41|10|E|type:landmark|region:AU|display=inline,title is a headland located at the extreme southern end of
Cockburn Sound inWestern Australia . The cape is noted for protected beaches, limestone cliffs, reefs and panoramic views.Cape Peron and the immediate locality are also known as Point Peron both locally and in written references. There is a small promontory on the South West of the Cape, though not it's most Westerly point, that is named "Point Peron".
Cape Peron is included in the Rockingham suburb of Peron.
The feature was named after
François Péron , a French naturalist who was on the expedition ofNicolas Baudin along the western coast of Australia in 1801.A causeway has been constucted between Cape Peron and Garden Island to allow vehicle traffic between the mainland and the island.
During
World War II , an observation post for the coastal battery was located on the hilltop, and the old buildings remain.The wreck of the "SS Orizaba" (1886-1905) lies just north, between Garden Island and Point Peron.
