The San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA)was founded in 1980 in San Carlos, a town located in San Diego County. At its inception, it had fewer than one hundred students, though more than 700 matriculate at the institution today. In 1999, The Academy built a new school in Carmel Valley which featured a High School, making the school, for the first time, a K-12 institution. The school's mascot is the lion. The SDJA maintains a dress code and all students must wear polo shirts and long pants every day.In February 2006, modifications to the school's playing field were completed, bringing it to the level of the school. A gym was finished in 2008. Plans to build other facilities including larger music classrooms and a future performing arts center are currently underway.

The lower school principal is Mr. Daniel Sussman and the upper school principal is Dr. Jeffrey Davis.
