Friesoythe is a town in the district of Cloppenburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Soeste, approx. 25 km northwest of Cloppenburg, and 30 km southwest of Oldenburg.

History

In 1945, it is believed that allied Canadian soldiers set civilian houses and a church on fire in reprisal for the death of the unit's commanding officer in battle, Cecil French.

Maj.-Gen. Christopher Vokes, commanding the 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division (his division was operating in Germany in mid-April) ordered the town to be destroyed. “We used the rubble to make traversable roads for our tanks,” Vokes wrote much later.
