United States Department of Justice National Security Division

The U.S. Department of Justice's National Security Division (NSD) is a new division within the Department designed to consolidate the Department's national security efforts within one unit, fulfilling a recommendation of the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction.cite web |title=Fact Sheet: USA PATRIOT Act Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 |publisher="United States Department of Justice" |date=2006-03-02 |accessdate=2008-02-28 |url=http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2006/March/06_opa_113.html ] The reorganization will bring together attorneys from the Criminal Division's Counterterrorism and Counterespionage Sections and the attorneys from the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review (OIPR), with their specialized expertise in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and other intelligence matters. On November 10, 2005, President Bush announced the nomination of Kenneth L. Wainstein to be the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the National Security Division.cite web |title=Presidential Nomination: David Matthew Spooner |publisher="The White House" |url=http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/nominations/1470.html |accessdate=2008-02-28 ] Wainstein was confirmed by the Senate on December 17, 2005.
