Silverware (sport)

Silverware (sport)

Silverware is a sporting term used to describe trophies awarded to winning players or teams. In English football, silverware is used to describe one of the cup trophies (of which the main two are the FA Cup and the Football League Cup) or the championship trophies awarded for winning one of the leagues. Silverware can also include European trophies such as the UEFA Cup or the UEFA Champions League.

The term has come to symbolise the measure of success in a season for major clubs, where many fans expect their team team to win some silverware annually. In 2004 the Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid sacked their coach Carlos Queiroz after a "no silverware" season. [http://worldsoccer.about.com/b/a/087778.htm] .
