Shams

Shams is the Arabic word for "sun" (شمس). It is included in:

* ash-Shams, the 91st sura of the Qur'an
* Majdal Shams, a village in the Golan Heights
* Shams Abu Dhabi, a real estate company
* Shams (company), a Saudi company
* Shams (newspaper), a Saudi newspaper that was temporarily closed after reprinting the "Muhammad cartoons"

It is a very common male (and rarely a female) given name in African and Middle Eastern countries:

* Princess Shams Pahlavi, elder sister of Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi
* Shams Tabrizi, an Iranian Sufi mystic
* Shams Langeroodi, contemporary Iranian poet
