Regis Henri Post (1870—1944) was a
New York politician andGovernor of Puerto Rico from 1907 to 1909.He was a
New York State Assembly man from 1899 to 1900, representingBayport, New York . He was appointedauditor ofPuerto Rico in 1903, Secretary of Puerto Rico in 1904, and then Governor in 1907 by appointment of PresidentTheodore Roosevelt . Post served as Governor fromApril 18 ,1907 toNovember 5 ,1909 . His governorship was extremely controversial, as his frequent disagreements with the Puerto RicoLegislature led to the Legislature's failure to pass any budget in 1909, resulting in a political crisis on the island and passage of theOlmsted Amendment at the request ofPresident William Howard Taft .Following Post's time in Puerto Rico, he worked with the
American Ambulance Corps inFrance from 1913 to 1914. He subsequently joined theAmerican Red Cross in 1917.In 1916, Post was discovered by his wife having an affair and they separated. She filed for divorce in 1922.
