Sunset Handicap

The Sunset Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run each year at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Los Angeles, California. The Grade IIT event is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-half miles on the grass and offers a purse of $250,000.

Inaugurated in 1940, the Sunset is a prep for many important turf stakes, especially the Breeders' Cup series so is now called the Sunset Breeders' Cup Handicap.

The 2006 race was won by the 5-year-old T.H. Approval, the favourite, by 1.5 lengths and in 2:26.65. His win paid $4.60.

Kayak II, Seabiscuit's stablemate and 1939s Champion US Handicap Horse, won this race in 1940. Hill Prince won it in 1950, Swaps in 1956, Gallant Man in 1958, South African import Colorado King in 1964, Fort Marcy 1968, the brilliant and tragic Exceller in 1978, and John Henry in 1984.
