Lonestar Education and Research Network

Lonestar Education And Research Network (LEARN) is a non-profit organization formed by Texas universities, university systems, and other education-related organizations to design, build, and operate a statewide, advanced data network in support of research and education. LEARN is also the name of the network itself.

As of March, 2006, LEARN had 33 members, each of which pays annual dues and is entitled to a voting seat on the Board of Directors. The Executive Director of LEARN is James E. Williams.

LEARN is a member of National LambdaRail, and indeed the opportunity to participate in NLR was critical to the formation of LEARN. Most, but not all, LEARN members are funding participants in LEARN's annual investment in NLR.

In early 2005, LEARN received $7.3M in one-time capital support from the Texas Enterprise Fund, which provided a complementary, $2.5M grant to five LEARN members to create TIGRE, Texas Internet Grid for Research and Education. The five universities are Rice, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Houston, and University of Texas at Austin.
