Recent news

ESPN.com recently released its historical rankings of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams announcing that the University of Pennsylvania came in at No. 34 in its "Prestige Rankings."

Penn was credited with 102 points using ESPN’s point system. The Quakers were just ahead of Alabama from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and just behind Georgia Tech from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Penn is the highest-ranking Ivy League program in the website’s rankings; Princeton is second at No. 40, with 93 points.

The rankings take into account the past 24 seasons, since the NCAA Tournament field expanded to 64 teams for the 1984-85 campaign.

The University of Pennsylvania’s John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball, Glen Miller, has announced his recruits for the Class of 2012. Five players will join the Quaker program as freshmen for the 2008-09 season.

“Our coaching staff is pleased with the talent level and upside this class brings to our basketball program,” said Miller, who will enter his third season at the helm in 2008-09. “The group includes players at all positions and has a few players who can play in multiple spots. We have managed to improve our versatility, physical strength and competitiveness. As a result, practices will be spirited and will better reflect game conditions. We are looking forward to what we believe will be an exciting and successful season.”

In assembling his second recruiting class at Penn, Miller and his staff stayed local to pick up Larry Loughery (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.), who attended St. Joseph’s Prep before attending the Academy of the New Church this past year. Miller also went up the road to North Jersey to land Zack Rosen (Colonia, N.J.), who played on a St. Benedict’s team that was ranked No. 1 for a portion of the 2006-07 season and finished that season ranked fifth nationally by USA Today. Mike Howlett (Amesbury, Mass.) has spent the last two years at New Hampton School in New Hampshire after earning All-Scholastic honors at St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts. Garvin Hunt is a relative newcomer to the game, playing the last few years at Sagemont Upper School in Florida after growing up in the Bahamas. Finally, Rob Belcore comes from the Midwest, where he starred for a Loyola Academy team that has won four consecutive regional championships in the Chicago suburbs.

Penn enters the 2008-09 season with all but three players back from a squad that went 8-6 in the Ivy League and finished third in the Ancient Eight, despite having by far the youngest and most inexperienced roster in the conference. The Quakers return the Ivy League and Philadelphia Big 5 Rookie of the Year in Tyler Bernardini, but must replace Brian Grandieri who was a second-team All-Ivy and All-Big 5 selection in 2007-08. One of Penn's most memorable season came in 1979 when the Quakers advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. With players such as Tony Price, the Quakers stunned the nation with victories over Iona, North Carolina, Syracuse, and St. John's to advance to the Final Four. The Quakers faced Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Michigan State in the national semifinals in Salt Lake City, Utah, but ultimately were met with defeat, 101-67. Other notable Penn teams include the team lead by guards Matt Maloney and Jerome Allen during the mid-1990s and the nationally-ranked teams of the early 1970s led by Dave Wohl, Steve Bilsky, Corky Calhoun and Bob Morse. Penn's 1970-71 team completed an undefeated regular season (26-0) and advanced to the Eastern Regional Final in the NCAA Tournament, losing there to Villanova.

The last NCAA Tournament victory for the Quakers came on March 17, 1994, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The No. 11 Red and Blue defeated the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 90-80, in the first round. The Quakers fell in the second round to No. 3 Florida on March 19, 1994, as the Gators prevailed, 70-58.
