Goalframe

A goalframe (goalpost in the US) is used in most sports where a goal must be scored, for example, football and hockey.

The goalframe consists of two vertical posts which are joined together by a horizontal post along the top which is known in football as the "crossbar". The goalframe was originally two upright wooden posts with a tape stretched across the top. Later, as permanent football stadiums were built, the tape was replaced by the crossbar. These old goalframes were termed the "fortress" or the "citadel", but these terms have long since fallen into disuse.

The goalframe makes it easy to distinguish when a legitimate goal has been scored. It also helps to keep the goal net up.

The crossbar is perhaps the most hazardous football implement. A number of people (especially children) have been killed by its sudden collapse onto the goalkeeper.Fact|date=February 2007
