Overview
Rangers played a total of 56 competitive matches during the 2000-01 season. They did for the second consecutive time, qualify for the UEFA Champions League. This failure was in spite of heavy investment in yet more Dutchmen - Bert Konterman and Fernando Ricksen. After a poor start and a 6-2 Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park, Advocaat again invested in the likes of Ronald de Boer and a signing which broke the Scottish transfer record, Tore Andre Flo for £12million.
Early optimism that Rangers were going to make an impact in Europe at last was tempered as they finished 3rd in a UEFA Champions League group that contained a poor Galatasaray team and Austrian champions Sturm Graz - who Rangers had beaten 5-0 at Ibrox in the first game. Rangers then promptly crashed out of the all cup competitions available to them. This was blamed on poor team morale, caused by factions in the dressing room between the Dutch players and the other nationalities - this caused Advocaat to give the captaincy from Lorenzo Amoruso to young Scot Barry Ferguson.
